Identifying and Managing Noxious Weeds
Not all plants are good neighbors. Noxious weeds and invasive species can take over quickly, crowding out native plants and disrupting entire ecosystems. Left unchecked, they can threaten drinking water supplies, agricultural crops, pasture land, and the natural habitats we all enjoy.
What is a Noxious Weed?
Under the Colorado Noxious Weed Act, a noxious weed is a non-native (alien) plant—or even a part of one—that has been officially designated as harmful at the state or local level. These plants earn their “noxious” status if they do one or more of the following:
Aggressively invade or damage crops or native plant communities
Poison livestock
Harbor harmful insects, diseases, or parasites
Interfere with the healthy management of natural or agricultural ecosystems
